A new report has raised concerns about how royalties from UK club nights are being distributed, revealing that most of the money collected through licensing never reaches the artists who made the tracks being played.

The research, published on 12 November by independent initiative Fair Play, shows that only a small portion of the fees paid by clubs ends up with the creators. Using the example of a medium-sized nightclub paying around £20,000 a year in PRS and PPL licences, the report found that just £5,688 actually gets paid out to artists.

Fair Play’s findings suggest the remaining money is lost through a mix of administrative deductions and gaps in royalty attribution. Roughly £4,200 (21%) is taken up by admin costs, while the largest share, £10,112 (50.6%), is “misallocated” simply because tracks cannot be accurately identified. Altogether, this means around 71.6% of the collected royalties never make it to their rightful recipients.

The report took six months to compile and includes data analysis as well as interviews across the electronic music community. One of the most worrying insights is how little producers earn from performance royalties. According to the study, 81% of producers see between zero and ten percent of their annual income come from this revenue stream.

The findings add to a growing conversation about transparency in the electronic music world. With club culture relying so heavily on the work of producers, Fair Play argues that current systems are failing the very people who keep dancefloors moving. The group hopes their research will push the industry toward more accurate tracking methods and fairer distribution practices.
