Generation Act: A non-profit organization that aims to make dance parties safer

Before we ever spoke, I had seen them several times, and something about them always drew me in. Every time they appeared at an event, there was something in their presence that caught my attention and made me want to walk over. Their booth stood out from afar: bright, colourful, nothing “heavy” like these kinds of initiatives usually feel. At festivals and events, I had noticed it again and again because it always gave off this clean, positive energy. So this time, I finally decided to walk up and meet the people behind Generation Act.

And honestly, I’m glad I did. The people at Generation Act aren’t trying to lecture you or tell you what you’re supposed to do. They speak like actual human beings. They listen, they explain, they answer without judging, and they avoid that hidden moralizing tone that often hangs over these topics in Greece. They talk about the things most people try to avoid: substance use without taboos, how drug checking works and why it matters, how to identify dangerous substances or interactions, how to protect yourself and your friends, if something goes wrong. They also talk about sexual safety, consent, STI prevention, how to move around events with more awareness, mental health support, and even how to handle a bad experience or a “bad trip.”

Beyond drug analysis, they hand out free condoms, provide testing kits, and offer informational material for safer use. If you have questions, they listen without sarcasm or judgment. They explain side effects, interactions, risks, things no one else is going to tell you in the moment. And the way they talk is so grounded and down to earth that there’s not even a trace of preaching. No “you must.” No “don’t do it.” Just reality. Just “here’s what you should know.” Just care.

And yet, even though their work is rooted entirely in care and safety, they’ve often faced unfair criticism. Some people misunderstand them, label them unfairly, or assume they’re encouraging use rather than protecting people. But in person, the truth is obvious: they’re not there to promote anything. They’re there because use already exists, and someone finally has to talk about it honestly and responsibly.

What became very clear to me is that Generation Act isn’t promoting drug use. They’re protecting people. Harm reduction isn’t a “green light” for anything. It’s public health. It’s realism. It’s respect for the fact that people will go out, have fun, make their own choices, and deserve to know how to keep themselves safe. They told me how big the gap is in Greece when it comes to proper information. In other countries, this kind of education is considered basic. Here, we’re afraid to even discuss it, as if saying it out loud will somehow make things worse. But the truth is that silence is far more dangerous. Information saves lives.
